During the Christmas period millions of people will use their gas appliances and boilers to fuel their home. While the festive season is a time for celebration, it’s important to make sure that you are gas safe this Christmas.

This year over 5.5 million people in the UK put their homes and lives at risk by not getting their gas appliances checked, and there have been more than 67,000 gas emergency call outs – that’s 186 a day! In addition to this, Gas Safe Register found dangerous appliances in one in six of the 142.000 homes they inspected in the past five years. This has lead to six deaths and more than 300 injuries in the past year (source, Gas Safe Register).

A gas inspection is quick and inexpensive and can protect you and your family. If you have a faulty gas appliance not only will it run inefficiently, you will expose you and those around you to the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning.

If you notice any of the following, book a gas safety check immediately:

  • Yellow or orange flame, rather than a blue one (not including fuel fires or flueless appliances that display this colour flame)
  • Soot or yellow/brown staining around or on appliances
  • Pilot light that blows out
  • Increased condensation inside windows

If you are in a rented property then it is your landlords duty to ensure that you have a smoke and carbon monoxide alarm installed and that your home has a gas safety check once a year.
