The first cold morning is the worst time to discover that your heating is not working properly.
After several months of relatively light use, your central heating system is about to move into a period of much heavier demand. A radiator that no longer heats properly, a thermostat that fails to call for heat or a boiler that keeps losing pressure may not seem urgent in early autumn, but these problems can become much more disruptive once the heating is needed every day.
A few straightforward checks can help you identify problems early and give you time to arrange professional attention if something is not right.
1. Test Your Heating Before You Need It
Don't wait for the first genuinely cold day to switch your heating on.
Run the system for a short period and check how it responds. The boiler should respond when there is a demand for heat, radiators should begin warming up and the thermostat and programmer should behave as expected.
Also pay attention to anything unusual, including:
- unusual banging, humming or vibrating;
- repeated boiler shutdowns;
- fault codes or warning messages;
- heating that takes noticeably longer than usual;
- areas of the property that remain cold.
The pattern can be useful. If the boiler fires but one radiator stays cold while the others heat normally, the boiler is unlikely to be the first place to investigate. A valve, trapped air or restricted flow could be responsible. If several radiators are affected, the problem may involve circulation, controls or another part of the system.
Testing the heating early gives you the opportunity to investigate rather than discover the problem when you need the system most.
2. Check Your Boiler Pressure
If you have a sealed central heating system, check the pressure gauge or digital display.
Many systems operate at around 1–2 bar when cold, but the correct pressure varies between boilers and installations. Your manufacturer's instructions should take priority over a generic figure.
A pressure reading that is slightly different from the expected range does not automatically mean there is a serious fault. What matters particularly is whether the pressure keeps changing or repeatedly falls.
If you are regularly having to top up the system, don't treat this as normal winter maintenance. Repeated pressure loss can indicate a leak or a problem with a component within the heating system and should be investigated.
3. Check Your Radiators
Once the heating has been running, check each radiator rather than assuming that heat from the boiler means the whole system is working correctly.
Where a radiator is cold can provide a useful clue:
- Cold at the top: trapped air may be preventing proper circulation.
- Cold at the bottom: sludge or restricted circulation may be contributing.
- One radiator affected: the issue may be local to the radiator or its valve.
- Several radiators affected: the cause may be related to wider circulation, controls or the heating system.
If a radiator needs bleeding, check the system pressure afterwards if you have a sealed system.
However, if the same radiator repeatedly develops a problem, or several radiators remain cold, repeatedly bleeding them may only address the symptom. The underlying cause needs to be established.
4. Test Your Thermostat and Heating Controls
A boiler can be working normally while a problem with the controls prevents the property from heating properly.
Check that your:
- thermostat is displaying the room temperature;
- programmer or timer is showing the correct time;
- heating schedule is set correctly;
- thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) are adjusted as required;
- thermostat batteries are working, where applicable.
Increase the thermostat temporarily and check that the boiler responds to the demand.
If the controls appear to be working but the heating does not respond, don't assume the boiler itself has failed. The fault could be elsewhere in the system and may need professional diagnosis.
5. Check Accessible Pipework and Insulation
Before colder weather arrives, look at any accessible heating or water pipework in areas such as lofts, garages or other unheated spaces.
Check that insulation is present and has not become damaged or displaced.
This is particularly worthwhile if you have experienced frozen pipes or cold-weather problems before. Good insulation can reduce the risk of freezing, but it does not guarantee that exposed pipework cannot freeze in severe conditions.
Do not remove the boiler casing or attempt to interfere with internal gas components. Checks involving the boiler itself should be left to an appropriately qualified professional.
6. Don't Ignore Problems That Keep Returning
A heating system does not have to stop working completely before it needs attention.
Arrange professional diagnosis if you notice:
- repeated pressure loss;
- persistent leaks;
- several radiators failing to heat;
- recurring fault codes or shutdowns;
- persistent unusual noises;
- heating that is significantly slower than normal;
- a problem that returns after a temporary fix.
This is where the distinction between a symptom and a fault becomes important.
For example, repeatedly resetting a boiler may restore heating temporarily, but it does not explain why the boiler keeps shutting down. Similarly, repeatedly bleeding a radiator does not establish why it continues to fill with air.
The right repair starts with identifying the cause.
7. Check When Your Boiler Was Last Serviced
Winter preparation is also a sensible time to check when your boiler was last professionally serviced.
If its annual service is due, arranging it before the colder months can be practical. Follow the manufacturer's servicing requirements and use an appropriately qualified engineer for gas work.
However, don't use a routine service as a substitute for investigating an existing fault. If the boiler is already losing pressure, leaking, shutting down or behaving unusually, mention these symptoms when arranging the appointment.
What If Your Heating Has Not Been Used All Summer?
A system that has been used very little over summer may reveal problems when it is switched back on.
You might find that a radiator valve is not operating as expected, the boiler displays a fault or the system pressure has changed.
This does not automatically mean that you need a new boiler or major work. Start with the basic checks above and look at how the system is behaving. If the problem persists or keeps returning, professional diagnosis is more useful than repeatedly resetting, bleeding or adjusting individual components.
