A Day in the Life of a Maintracts Heating Engineer in Winter

Early starts, frozen pipes and Christmas deadlines: what it really takes to keep London warm.

Winter at Maintracts isn’t just busy, it’s a whirlwind.

From the first cold snap in late October until the final frost in March, the phones ring earlier, the jobs take longer, and our heating engineers carry the responsibility of keeping Londoners warm, safe, and comfortable.

Across the four coldest months, Maintracts engineers complete around 5,829 jobs (Oct 25- Jan 26). Everything from emergency boiler breakdowns to late-night callouts for homes left without hot water. And while the work can be demanding, it’s ultimately about people.

This is a behind-the-scenes look at what a real winter day is like for the Maintracts team: the early starts, the unpredictable jobs, the Christmas chaos, and the quiet pride that comes with helping people through their most stressful household moments.

Meet the Maintracts Team: Specialists with Heart

Maintracts is a family-run business, and our team reflects that spirit.

Across the company, there are specialists for every type of job. You’ve got:

  • Breakdown engineers, who thrive on fast diagnostics and emergency repairs.
  • Heating and servicing engineers, managing winter boiler checks and efficiency issues.
  • Certification specialists, who handle electrical certificates, gas safety inspections, and legal checks.
  • General plumbers, each with their own strengths, some are brilliant leak detectives, others excel at complex heating system troubleshooting.

Many of the team have been with the company for years. In fact, 96% have been part of Maintracts for 5+ years, and several even started as apprentices.

And because Maintracts is family-run, flexibility is part of our culture too.

Some of the lads start an hour later to drop their kids to school or finish early for pick-up. We understand that balance. Winter is intense - long days, long nights - so where we can support work/life balance, we do.

6:30AM
The Early Start, Coffee, and First Jobs

For many engineers, the day starts before the sun comes up.

6:30am – 7:00am

A quick coffee - sometimes from the same local shop they’ve visited for years - and then straight to suppliers to collect any parts pre-ordered for the day’s schedule.

While London is still waking up, engineers are already scrolling through the digital tablet that carries their world:
job lists, customer notes, certifications, photos, and updated appointment times.

Maintracts switched to a new Android-based software last year, and the feedback from the team has been overwhelmingly positive.

The old system wasn’t great on iPhones. This one’s much smoother. Photos upload properly, invoicing is quicker, and the team don’t have to fight the app to finish a job.

On a typical winter day, an engineer might have 5 to 8 scheduled jobs listed on their tablet - though emergencies will usually change that number.

First Callouts: Heating, Hot Water, and Everything in Between

By 8am, the first customers of the day are already waiting.

1. Boiler Breakdown

The classic winter emergency. Most breakdown engineers will tell you they can diagnose a boiler’s problem within the first few minutes, often before opening the casing.

Common winter issues include:

  • seized pumps
  • pressure drops
  • frozen condensate pipes
  • faulty diverter valves
  • worn-out ignition components

With around 50% of winter callouts related to boiler breakdowns, this is the season where experience really counts.

3. Radiators Not Heating Properly

Engineers routinely:

  • bleed radiators
  • balance heating systems
  • identify sludge issues
  • diagnose circulation problems

Around 40% of winter callouts involve radiator/heating related issues.

2. Hot Water Troubles

Showers running lukewarm or cold, hot water cylinders not heating properly, immersion heaters failing - all extremely common once temperatures drop.

Many customers tolerate cold showers in summer, but come winter, they want proper heat.

4. Electrical Problems

Shorter daylight hours mean customers suddenly notice
lighting issues they’ve ignored all summer. People realise their kitchen spotlights haven’t worked for months! Winter exposes everything.

11:30AM
The Unpredictable Middle of the Day

You can plan a perfectly structured day… until winter has other ideas.

Around late morning, the emergency callouts begin.

  • A family with no heating.
  • A boiler that failed overnight.
  • A dripping pipe that suddenly starts pouring.
  • A hot water system that quits on the coldest day of the year.

This is where Maintracts’ expertise (and teamwork) comes into play.

Each engineer has their strengths. One might be brilliant at leak detection. Another thrives on complex boiler diagnostics. We try not to fit square pegs in round holes. But emergencies happen, sometimes we all have to jump in.

On average, Maintracts responds to 20+ emergency calls per day in January.

Engineers may swap jobs, adjust schedules, or divert to customers who need urgent help - elderly homeowners, families with young children, or customers whose boiler failure poses a safety risk.

1:30PM
Grab Lunch (If There’s Time!)

Lunch in winter is rarely a sit-down event.

Often it’s:

  • a sandwich in the van
  • a quick snack between jobs
  • a hot drink grabbed between callouts

If you asked one of our heating engineers what they like at lunchtime, they’d likely reply “Heat. And food. In that order.”

2:00PM
The Afternoon Wave: Christmas Panic Mode Begins

As December approaches, everything becomes urgent – we call it “The Pre-Christmas Effect.”

We see:

  • a predicted 25 to 30% increase in callouts between mid-Nov and Christmas
  • a surge in bathroom refurb requests
  • “before the guests arrive” panic repairs
  • lighting and electrical fixes driven by short daylight hours

Even small issues become top priority for customers hosting festive gatherings.

Engineers often end up working:

  • occasional Saturdays
  • extended weekday hours
  • last-minute troubleshooting jobs

It’s like everyone collectively realises in mid-November that they have guests coming, and suddenly every dripping tap is a crisis!

3:30PM

Specialist Jobs: Leak Detection, Certifications, or Complex Systems

Depending on their skillset, an engineer might spend the afternoon on:

Leak Tracing

These are intricate jobs that require:

  • cutting into ceilings or walls
  • using moisture meters
  • following pipework routes
  • repairing with minimal disruption

A skilled leak detection engineer is worth their weight in gold.

Gas or Electrical Certifications

Essential for landlords, homebuyers, and safety compliance.

Technical Diagnostics

Large heating systems, unvented cylinders, pumps, expansion vessels - the kind of jobs where years of experience matter more than toolkits.

On average, a Maintracts engineer uploads 10-15 photos per day to document their work.

5:00PM
After-Dark Callouts and End-of-Day Notes

In winter, the sun has long set before the last job. In fact, the majority of winter jobs happen after dark - a visual reminder of just how much engineers give during this season.

Once the final customer is warm and safe, the engineer heads back to the van, logs onto the tablet, and completes their:

  • notes
  • photos
  • certifications
  • invoices
  • recommendations for the customer

Only then is the day officially finished, unless, of course, another emergency comes through.

What Engineers Wish
Homeowners Would Do
(But Rarely Do)

Winter is chaotic not only because of the weather, but because of preventable issues that snowball.

Here’s what engineers wish people would do earlier:

1. Clear Their Drains and Gutters

Autumn leaves clog gutters, and winter rainfall pushes systems to their limits.

3. Service Their Boiler BEFORE a Cold Snap

A quick check in late summer/autumn prevents a winter emergency in January.

2. Avoid Pouring Christmas Grease Down the Sink

Every January, Maintracts sees a wave of fat-induced blockages. We could almost set our clocks by it...turkey fat plus cold pipes commonly equal a solid blockage.

4. Turn Their Heating On for Short Bursts Early in the Season

So many winter breakdowns come from systems that haven’t run for months.

The Human Side of the Job

Amid the technical work, winter highlights something powerful: the emotional side of being a heating engineer.

Engineers often see customers at their most stressed or vulnerable - elderly homeowners without heating, families with no hot water, parents of newborns trying to keep a nursery warm.

This emotional connection always lies at the heart of our job.

From dawn to well after dusk, a winter day at Maintracts is unpredictable, challenging, and deeply human. Our engineers balance technical expertise with empathy, practical demands with family life, and scheduled jobs with emergency callouts.

They repair homes, reassure families, and quite literally keep London warm.

And behind every job, there’s a person, an engineer with skill, dedication, and a commitment to doing the right thing, even on the coldest, darkest days of the year.

If you experience a plumbing or heating mishap in winter, or any time of the year, you know who to call.
